Night before Christmas

When we got home from Grandma and Grandpa's house last night we picked out the best cookies to leave out for Santa. Then I asked Leona what she wanted to say in our note to him. She said "ho ho ho, drink your milk." We signed it from Josie, too.

Then Santa came....but Josie was the only one who saw him.

Christmas Eve

Last night we celebrated Christmas Eve with the Mastropietro side of the family. We had a really wonderful time! Leona was in a great mood...at dinner she walked around the dining room table tickling everyone and sometimes breaking into her USA chant. (I taught her that when we were wrapping presents.) Here are a couple of my favorite pictures of LB with her Grandma Peggy.

And this is the moment when she realized the biggest present in the room was for her.

Christmas Tree

Every year I try to get a few pictures of Leona in front of the tree. (You can see the previous years here and here.) The first year was easy because I had her undivided attention (she couldn't run away from me yet!) But the past two years I had to find ways to keep her interested. I tried a lollipop last year and that was a mess,  so this year I let her help Josie open one of her presents. Here are my favorites of the bunch.

Santa

Leona met Santa a couple times this year, once at the firehouse and then again last Sunday at the local nursery. The first time at the firehouse she was so in tune to all the other kids that she didn't really focus on Santa, but the second time she was able to actually talk to him one-on-one. We waited in a pretty short line (with lots of fun stuff to look at and some other nice kids to play with) then she sat on his lap and actually smiled for a picture. I was seriously shocked, I think this is the best picture we have of her! Before she could walk away he bent down and asked her to tell him what she wanted for Christmas. She was a little shy at first but eventually she told him she wanted a bone for Josie. I told him Josie was our dog and he winked. Then when we were leaving one of the people who work there handed her a little candy cane. She reached up into the box to grab a second one (I was a little embarrassed but he laughed and said it was fine.) Then she handed the second one to me. I thought my heart was going to explode.

Leona's 3rd Halloween

This year we bought Leona a little cheeseburger costume because it made me laugh and she doesn't seem to care about these things yet. Anthony tried to get her to try it on before Halloween and she wouldn't, so we thought she might refuse to wear it. But once we started answering the door to other little kids in costumes she changed her mind. Halloween had actually been officially cancelled because of the storm, a cop drove around at 3:00 with a bullhorn telling kids that they weren't supposed to go trick-or-treating because it was unsafe with the power lines down. Mind you there were kids in costumes walking around the cop's car, just staring at the guy. They probably should have cancelled it a little sooner, by that point it was too late. We only went to a handful of houses on the same street as Grandma's house but it was worth it.  Just to walk down the street with LB and see her walk up to the doors then get so shy was priceless. She was saying trick or treat in the driveways, but when we got to the door she just stood and stared blankly.

RVC Rec Center

This past week we stayed with LB over at grandma and grandpa's house, doing a lot of puzzles, coloring, hearing stories, and eating Halloween candy. One day I told Leona we could go to the playground so Grandma Peggy recommended one that she used to take the boys to. The outdoor playground was closed (most have been this week) but I took her inside the attached rec center and they happened to have this toddler roll-around happening. It seemed like quite a few people also without power brought their kids there that day and the rec center wasn't charging anything for the kids to play. Talk about being in the right place at the right time, Leona had so much fun! She jumped on a trampoline, played in a ball pit, and ran around wildly with other little kids. It was hard to get a good picture since she was in constant motion! Except for when she got stuck in the little padded bucket thing and cried until I pulled her out. Later I found out that this is the same gym that Anthony took karate classes in when he was little.

Anthony's big b-day

The night before the hurricane we celebrated Anthony's 34th birthday! It was a couple days early but LB and I made him his peanut butter chocolate b-day cake (per request) while he was working on Saturday. After our little b-day celebration Anthony and LB did some horsing around for the camera.

We had to test the frosting to make sure it wasn't poisoned.
She did a pretty awesome job decorating the cake!

Every time I tell her to hang on tight she does this pose.

Anthony thinks it's really hilarious to pants her.

Hurricane Sandy

Hello all, we are safe and sound after Monday's hurricane, thank God. We were in a mandatory evacuation zone and did not evacuate. I know how careless that was. We stayed home for a couple reasons. One was that I honestly thought the whole thing was just a media circus and that it was being blown out of proportion. The other reason was that last year for Hurricane Irene Anthony was at work, so Leona and I went to stay with Grandpa Arthur and Grandma Peggy to ride out the storm together. This year Anthony was home with us so we felt safe being home. The power went out around 6, so we spent the evening playing yahtzee and drinking beer by candlelight, much like our camping days. We didn't think it would be as bad as it was, but certainly won't ever make that mistake again. We were very lucky. We had no flooding and no damage to the house. We had part of the neighbor's tree in the back yard, the stop sign on our corner blew down, and we watched the train crossing bar fold in half and hang dangling across the tracks. We lost power from Monday through Friday, which seems fast considering how many trees are still down. Now there is a gas shortage but Anthony being Anthony we had full tanks before the storm, so we're fine. These things really put it all in perspective and make you cherish and appreciate your loved ones so much. I've been hugging Leona too tightly all week and she is beginning to swat me away. :) We stayed with Grandma and Grandpa while the power was out and it was wonderful. We are so lucky.

I'm trying to figure out what we should do to help those who were not as lucky as we were. We have some information that we need to look over and figure out if we should donate food or money or time (which is tough as I want to spend every waking second with LB.) I'm not that organized but I feel guilty that we are home now like nothing happened when there are so many still hurting.

Here are just a few pics from around our neighborhood. It has been pretty surreal seeing so many huge trees hanging from power lines or lying across streets. We're close enough to the water that we've seen a lot of families pumping the water out of their houses with all their possessions in garbage bags out on the street. These pictures don't really do justice to how scary it is to see it in person. It seems like every single block had a huge tree either on a house or in the road. That along with broken street lights made even the daylight after the storm seem eery. I'm sure in another week once we're back to our routine it will seem very distant and Leona will never remember this but it's a time I won't forget.

All caught up!

I think we're about all caught up on all the fun we had this summer! Hope everyone's summer was wonderful, too.

Playground fun!

I think we were at this playground down by the water almost every weekend this summer! LB loves it there, except for the bees.

Queens Zoo

Here is LB with her friend Ben at the petting zoo.

Hershey Park

We took a little road trip to Hershey to celebrate the last weekend of summer!

Natural History Museum

Here are a few pictures from our little trip to the Natural History Museum this summer.  There wasn't quite enough stuff for LB to touch and play with, but I think she enjoyed seeing the big dioramas! Then we did a little walk through Central Park to find a playground so she could blow off some steam.

Not so sure about the Carousel

Leona wasn't sure what was going on here but once the Carousel started moving I think she had fun. Especially when we finished the day with cotton candy.

Long Island Children's Museum

One weekend Anthony and I took LB to the LI Children's Museum. That place was amazing I would definitely go back! She especially loved the bubble room.

BIg girl bed!

The biggest change that happened this summer was converting the crib to a big girl bed! The only hard part is getting her to stay in it. We hear her stomping over to our bed a few times a night and one of us has to walk her back and tuck her in.
